因此，很诡异的是，不管我们的主观经验是多么明确，至今仍然没有定论。科学的特征之一是客观观察，以第三者的观点，从事物的外部来进行探讨。由于研究方法先天失调，科学在意识的研究上，严格说起来并没有什么实质的进展。

为什么没有理论是从直接观察意识本身下手的呢？意识的特性是什么？它是如何作用的？所有的生物（动物和植物）都有所谓意识这种东西吗？我们的意识，只有在“意识到”什么东西的时候才存在吗？例如，在没有做梦的睡眠状态，意识或许就是静止，或甚至根本就终止？意识是由一连串心智起伏的变动所组成的？或者，它是一种持续的连续变动状态？ 意识本身有层次吗？意识是不是一定要有对象，一种被意识到的东西？意识和“非意识”或“无意识”有什么关系？这里提到的无意识，并不是肉体层次上提的无意识，那种没有脑部电化学活动的心智状态；而是指更复杂的、故意去追求的、一种“无心”或“无念”且很值得探讨的心智状态，没有记忆、没有期望、没有任何心绪波动。这是一种高度主观的特殊意识经验。科学——以第三者的立场来做客观的认定——可能了解这种主观经验吗？

描述主观意识经验所涉及的问题，真的很复杂。因为我们要把一组纯属内部的经验具体化，却要把这个经验的主体尽量排除在外。但事实上，我们又无法把自己排除在事件之外。如果没有自身的经验，纯粹用些中性字眼（如波长），根本没有一种科学描述能告诉我们颜色的区别 ，譬如“什么是红色？”由于我们研究的对象是心智，这就构成一种独特的质问方式。除了研究对象是心智外，进行研究的主体也是心智，连研究与了解的媒介物质，也是心智。要利用科学方法来研究意识，有些问题是不能克服的。在这种研究主体、研究对象、研究工具都是同一种东西的情况下，难免有人怀疑，这种研究是有效力的吗？

记得我还是个小孩子时，第一次学习“认识论”，我必须背诵一句格言：“心智的定义是指那种明亮而确知的东西。”这一幕，至今历历在目。从早期的印度思想里，西藏思想家为意识下了定义，“明亮而确知”。多年以后，我才了解在这句简单的格言背后，隐藏着多少复杂难解的哲学问题。今天，当我在辩经场合里，看到九岁大的小沙弥充满信心地引述意识的定义。此时，我不禁莞尔一笑。
